After the huge success of his 2005 major label debut, THE PEOPLE'S CHAMP, would Paul Wall make good on what the title of his follow-up promises? While it's true that the legendary Houston rapper and industry player has made room for a wide range of big-name guest stars (with Dirty South favorites sharing air time with both east- and west-coast representatives), he's still working the same proven system: heavy low-end bass tracks crossed with drawn-out and slurred southern rhyme schemes. A major part of Wall's staying true lies in his ability to get all the artists on the varied guest list (including Yung Redd, Lil Keke, E Class, Freeway Jon B, KLC, Juelz Santana, and Snoop Dogg) to find their place within his distinct H-Town format. Aside from the Jermaine Dupri-produced crossover club banger "I Throwed," much of GET MONEY, STAY TRUE's beats come courtesy of Houston mainstay Mr. Lee, proving that Wall might travel the country to get his money, but he's always coming home for the truth.
Entertainment Weekly (p.62) - "[M]ost of the slow-rolling synth compositions on his second solo album suit him quite well." -- Grade: B XXL (Magazine) (p.129) - "On the brooding, KLC-produced 'I'm Real, What Are You,' Wall rhymes smoother than candy paint....The Champ succeeds again when trading flows with guests Freeway and Snoop Dogg."
Mr. Paul Slayton, aka Paul Wall, was born in 1980 and was raised on the slo-mo, "chopped and screwed" stylings of Houston hero DJ Screw. Soon he and fellow hometown MC Chamillionaire converged as the Color Changin Click, enjoying local mixtape success as well as a well-received debut LP, GET YA MIND CORRECT. After a high-profile verse on Mike Jones's "Still Tippin'," solo repute came calling, and 2005's THE PEOPLES CHAMP turned Wall into a superstar. In the ensuing years, he's released GET MONEY STAY TRUE, started his own line of accessories (Grills By Paul Wall), and lent his street cred to singles by the likes of Brooke Hogan.
