While many rap artists have recorded albums while behind bars (Slick Rick, Shyne, Pimp C, etc.), the circumstances behind C-Murder's THE TRUEST S#!@ I EVER SAID are even more dire. C-Murder's sixth album was recorded under strict opposition by the local sheriff where the New Orleans MC was jailed, facing life in prison without the possibility of parole for a nightclub murder. Released while the rapper awaited his fate on appeal, THE TRUEST S#!@ I EVER SAID lives up to its name as C-Murder paints a stark picture of a hard life teetering on the edge of oblivion. C-Murder opens the record with an "Intro" comprised of news clips, where he emphatically states he didn't commit the crime, before setting the scene with a vintage No Limit flow on "My Life." The rapper occasionally drifts into a glorification of violence, particularly on opening single, "Yall Heard of Me," but more often the stories are adorned with sad reflection, a sorrow that bleeds out through the toughness. On "Won't Let Me Out," he takes a hefty portion of Akon's 2004 hit about incarceration, "Locked Out," and builds it (with Akon's production help) into an even more poignant track, while on "Mama How You Figure," C-Murder wonders whether he ever had a chance. With hopes for his freedom slipping away, C-Murder drops some of the most powerful rhymes of his career.
Vibe (p.144) - 3 discs out of 5 - "THE TRUEST captures some of that Louisiana ghetto soundscape we know and love."
C-Murder first came to the attention of the rap world for bringing regional Southern rap to national prominence. In 1997, his New Orleans-based trio TRU, along with brothers Silkk the Shocker and No Limit label impresario Master P, scored a hit with "True 2 Da Game," the group's sophomore album, which sold over two million units in its first year. Following Master P's steps closely, C-Murder acted in No Limit's straight-to-video release "I'm Bout It," as well as the comedy "I Got the Hookup." His 2000 release "Trapped in Crime" continued the upward trajectory for this gravel-voiced MC.
