Performer: T.I.

(rap vocals); Jamie Foxx, Pharrell Williams (vocals); Common, Governor, PSC, UGK, Young Buck, Young Jeezy, Young Dro (rap vocals). Scheduled to coincide with the release of his film ATL, the album KING indicates that 2006 may be the year for Southern rapper T.I. The Atlanta native had already established a strong track record with an impressive run of singles and three solid studio albums prior to the release of KING, but his 2006 effort is his most polished and consistent to date. T.I.'s delivery is fluid and drawn out, and his rhymes tackle subjects typical to the gangsta rap milieu. The musical approach on KING isn't much different from the rapper's previous releases, but it's nonetheless better, with tighter rhymes, more assured execution, and superior production. In fact, it's the latter that gives KING its gleam: T.I. is backed by expansive, innovative tracks that set the stage for the next generation of Southern rap.
Spin (p.60) - Ranked #14 in Spin's "The 40 Best Albums of 2006" -- "He united East Coast hip-hop values, like lyricism and creativity, with Dirty South drawl, hooks, and charm."
XXL (Magazine) (p.132) - "[W]here Tip truly wins is with his Jamie Foxx collabo 'Live in the Sky'..."
Although T.I. was a player on the Atlanta rap scene as early as early as 2001, a less-than-stellar debut and a brief prison stint delayed his rise to fame until 2004 and the release of URBAN LEGEND. Featuring a host of top-shelf producers and guest MCs, the album was a hit, but was immediately eclipsed by its successor, 2006's KING, which debuted at number one on the Billboard pop charts. A tenacious performer and entrepreneur, T.I.'s career has been marked by an insatiable hunger for success throughout the entirety of the pop world. His profile was raised that much higher following his starring turn in the 2006 film ATL.
