Notes: Issued less than six months after Coldplay's well-received 2008 studio outing, VIVA LA VIDA OR DEATH AND ALL HIS FRIENDS, the eight-track PROSPEKT'S MARCH EP serves as a companion piece to the album. Three songs from VIVA LA VIDA are presented in altered form, most notably a version of "Lost!" that features a surprising cameo by hip-hop superstar Jay-Z. The main draw of MARCH is, naturally, the handful of previously unreleased tracks, which include the soaring, stadium-ready "Glass of Water" and the lilting, electronica-tinged "Rainy Day," a tune that bears the mark of producer Brian Eno more than many VIDA-related songs. While not absolutely essential Coldplay, PROSPEKT'S MARCH is an enjoyable extension of VIDA, making it of particular interest to ardent fans of the record.
Billboard (p.41) - "'Glass of Water' is unusually bombastic, and 'Rainy Day' sports a jittery electro beat in the vein of U2'x 'Zooropa'..."
In 2000, Coldplay emerged seemingly out of nowhere to become a worldwide smash with their debut album PARACHUTES and hit single "Yellow." While oft lumped in with the Britpop crowd, they favor a more thoughtful, melodic, Travis-esque piano-centric pop approach than arena-rock chest-beaters like Oasis. Led by charismatic frontman Chris Martin, the band expanded its horizons (and its fanbase) throughout the aughts, while remaining true to its basic form. One of the only British rock bands of their era to make a major impact on the US charts, Coldplay prove that simple, memorable, straightforward pop-rock can still be striking even in the post-everything 21st century.
