Big Bad Voodoo Daddy: Scotty Morris (vocals, guitar); Andy Rowley (tenor & baritone saxophones, background vocals); Ralph Votrian (trumpet, background vocals); Dirk Shumaker (bass, background vocals); Kurt Sodergren (drums, percussion). Recorded at Master Tracks, San Bernandino, California. After the Squirrel Nut Zippers opened up the door with their jazzy, retro-swinging sound, the music industry became a friendly place for zoot-suited, sax-wielding bands like the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, the Flying Neutrinos and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Though BBVD pay homage to the past with their glib, jumping swing sound, '40s-style horn arrangements and anachronistic lyrics, they definitely have their own agenda. With the exception of an inspired version of Cab Calloway's classic "Minnie The Moocher," all the tunes are original, written by vocalist/guitarist Scotty Morris. This self-titled effort finds the band organizing their priorities well, with tight, energetic arrangements and a prevailing sense of humor coming to the fore.
