Performer: Scott Walker
Producer: John Franz Distributor: Phantom Import Distributi Notes: Liner Note Author: Paul Howes. Directors: Reg Guest; Keith Roberts; Wally Stott. Arranger: Wally Stott. Shy of a full-blown box set, this two-disc anthology of Scott Walker's 1960s/'70s work, on his own and with the Walker Brothers, is as comprehensive as one could wish. While the outre avant-garde work of Walker's later years would require (and surely warrants) its own collection, CLASSICS & COLLECTIBLES admirably documents his journey from mid-'60s pop idol to moody late-'60s Brel disciple/songpoet and mid-'70s Adult Contemporary crooner. Through all the stylistic shifts, that cavernous, magnificently expressive voice seems as if it can do no wrong.
Noel Scott Engel, better known as Scott Walker, was born in the US, but found fame in the UK as a member of the Walker Brothers, who became teen pop idols in England in the 1960s. After the group's demise, Walker's darker, artier side eventually came to the fore, and he began a quirky solo career that encompassed Jacques Brel covers, moody, saloon-singer crooning, and avant-garde tendencies. He became the quintessential cult figure, inscrutable and highly influential, though after the '70s his works were few and far between.
