Newcomer Fran Cosmo replaces longtime singer Brad Delp, whose voice was an essential ingredient in Boston's instantly recognizable sound. Guitarist Tom Scholz is the sole member remaining from Boston's original lineup. Scholz comes pretty close to recreating Boston's classic, multi-layered sound on such cuts as "I Need Your Love," "Surrender to Me," and "What's Your Name." While WALK ON didn't prove as big a blockbuster as BOSTON, DON'T LOOK BACK, and THIRD STAGE, the album still sold respectably enough to reach platinum certification shortly after its release.
Masterminded by songwriter/guitarist Tom Scholz, Boston became one of the biggest bands of the 1970s with their immaculately produced brand of classic rock. By combining the epic scale of prog-rock with the immediate impact of killer pop hooks, Boston's debut immediately rocketed up the charts and made the band an arena-headliner, but it would take them years to issue follow-up recordings. In 2007, the emotionally troubled lead vocalist of the band, Brad Delp, died of a reported suicide at his home in New Hampshire.
