Notes: Given that the Spice Girls achieved their towering popular success in the 1990s through a string of winning singles, it seems hard to believe that fans had to hang in there until 2008 for a decent singles compilation. But good things come to those who wait, and GREATEST HITS delivers in spades what made the Spice Girls famous: fizzy, catchy tunes and plenty of style and attitude. The essentials--"Wannabe," "Say You'll Be There," "2 Become 1"--are all here, of course, along with a few singles that deserve to be as well known, namely the old school R&B number "Stop" and the funky groover "Who Do You Think You Are." GREATEST HITS also contains two new songs.
No other 1990s all-female teen-pop dance group enjoyed as much success and popularity as the Spice Girls. With each member going by a personality-fitting name (Scary Spice, Sporty Spice, etc.), the Spice Girls were the subject of a merchandising frenzy which led to their own movie, 1997's SPICE WORLD. After Geri Halliwell left, the group managed to put one more album in 2000 before dissolving into a sea of solo projects and tell-all autobiographies.
