Photographer: Guzman/Rotterdam Conservatory Orquesta Tipica. Dru Hill is a new-jack soul quartet that follows mentor Keith Sweat's lead on its debut album. Paeans to Herculean late-night exploits and calls of soul-cleaning devotion are interspersed over old-fashioned soul licks, delivered with modern R&B technology. At times, as on "Tell Me," the low and high roads to a heart co-mingle in a fashion that would make Prince envious. But Dru Hill seldom reaches the Minneapolitan's funky musical raunch. Instead, Sisqo, Woody, Nokio and Jazz choose to be smooth like butter: all rich harmonies, laid-back finger snaps and synthesized harps.
Muzik (2/97, p.114) - 8 out of 10 - "With swingbeat getting slender and slower, and the beats getting thinner and lower, one wonders whether you should get down on the dancefloor or get between the sheets and tell somebody you need some love & affection....pure bonking music."
Vibe (2/97, p.105) - "...Dru Hill promise devotion, emotion, the world, and then some for the love of the ladies....[T]his is strictly R&B..."
Named after the famous Druid Hill Park in the Baltimore neighborhood in which they all grew up, Dru Hill were one of the most successful R&B acts of the 1990s. The group scored a staggering number of R&B and pop hits in the later years of the decade, with their Will Smith collaboration, "Wild Wild West," topping the Billboard singles chart. The group created the Dru World Order concept in 1999, with each member recording a solo album for the Def Soul label, and helping to develop new artists as well. Mark "Sisq" Andrews became the immediate break-out star with his smash single, "Thong Song," from the juggernaut of an album UNLEASH THE DRAGON. The group reunited in 2002 for the DRU WORLD ORDER album, which sold quite well, but effectively marked the end of the band.
