Young folk-rockers Third Day have a message of Christian faith to deliver, and like many of their contemporaries, they do it not in the gospel format, but with a radio-ready sound that wouldn't sound out of place next to Tonic, Third Eye Blind, et al. Third Day proves fully capable of bristling, highly charged roots-rock, but they're also adept at a softer sound that incorporates smooth vocal harmonies and pealing acoustic guitar. Whether they're coming off like a more spiritual Black Crowes on the R&B-inflected "Took My Place" or keeping things down-home and acoustic on the gentle opening cut, "I've Always Loved You," the group never forgets its underlying mission, and the lyrics are full of faith, as well as detailed descriptions of all the conflict and strife that faith can bring about in the modern world. If Hootie & the Blowfish spent more time in church, they might sound something like this.
Third Day is one of CCM's biggest crossover acts, known as much for their tuneful alt-rock craft as for their earnest faith. Formed in the mid-1990s in Georgia, Third Day started out like most indie bands, gigging relentlessly and releasing low-budget home recordings. In 1996, they signed a multi-album deal with Reunion Records, the premier Christian label, which ensured radio play and audience exposure on a much bigger scale. Tours and collaborations with acts like Newsboys and Michael W. Smith followed, helping to raise their profile even more, and by the '00s, the band were genuine CCM stars, in an offshoot genre--Alternative CCM--that they helped to create.
