Analogue Productions' Absolute Originals is a numbered limited-edition set, with no more than 2,500 copies in production, but the question is, is it really a collectable item? There may not be many copies of Absolute Originals made, but does anybody need a set that rounds up the hybrid SACDs of CCR's seven album, puts them in a dull LP-sized box with good liner notes from Ben Fong-Torres, and then adds a bonus 45? Surely, there are some CCR fans who have been waiting to get these SACDs and it will be nice to get them all in one place, but there is nothing truly collectable here, and nothing to offer the fans who already have the discs, or 2001's excellent box set Creedence Clearwater Revival, which had all the albums plus a bunch of bonus material that does not appear here. Yes, the music is great, but it's easier and cheaper to get it elsewhere. So, for those who want the SACDs in an oversized box, they would do well to turn here, but most fans and collectors will not find this to be necessary in the slightest. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Creedence Clearwater Revival seemed like something of an anomaly in the psychedelic 1960s. Far removed from the mind-expanding, flower-power explorations of their California contemporaries, they were a gritty, hard-hitting band respectful of their blues, country, and rock & roll roots. John Fogerty's cutting, raspy voice bore echoes of Howlin' Wolf and Little Richard as he delivered lyrics that alternately celebrated and bemoaned a working man's life. In a rare instance of art and commerce coinciding, CCR's stream of hit singles made them one of the most successful '60s rock bands. The band broke up acrimoniously in the early '70s, but Fogerty went on to a successful (if sporadic) solo career.
