Deep Purple's 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection volume is devoted to their '80s recordings for Mercury, including the fairly solid The House of Blue Light. This does round up the highlights from those records, and it does a good job of doing it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Most editions of Universal's 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection series capture the featured artist if not at their very peak, at least at a moment in their career when they were having hits. That's not the case with Deep Purple's volume. It's devoted to their '80s recordings for Mercury, a time that isn't considered one of their peaks, even if it did produce the fairly solid The House of Blue Light. This does round up the highlights from those records, and it does a good job of doing it, but it's not for most listeners -- especially the kind that would normally be quite satisfied by a volume of 20th Century Masters. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

One of the longest running and most prolific of hard rock/proto-heavy-metal bands, Deep Purple appeared in the wake of the psychedelic era, sporting a harder sound than anything that had come before. The classic 1970s lineup (featuring virtuoso guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, wailing tenor Ian Gillan, and classically influenced keyboardist Jon Lord) established the template for countless metal bands that followed in their wake. They went through numerous lineup changes over the years, with singers David Coverdale and Joe Lynn Turner and guitarists Tommy Bolin and Steve Morse all passing through the ranks. Since the 1980s, sporadic reunions have found key members returning to the fold.
