Pioneering skate-punk band MXPX's delightfully bratty insouciance still seemed too fresh in 2002 to have been in effect for a full decade, but that's exactly the anniversary that this definitive collection exists to commemorate. Along with peers like Green Day and Pennywise, MXPX melded the energy of the California hardcore scene with the pop smarts of old-school Britpunks the Buzzcocks to create an accessible but still entirely credible brand of pop-punk. The sheer drive of the tunes included on this compilation is impressive enough, but when you throw in the abundance of memorable melodies and ear-catching harmonies they sport, it becomes all the more admirable. Containing three new songs along with the oldies, and a thick booklet chock full of information about and photos of the band, this is both a fan's dream and a novice's boon.
Alternative Press (8/02, p.77) - 7 out of 10 - "...A nice overview of MxPx's brand of unthreatening adolescent angst."
MxPx were a spunky trio of Pacific Northwest teenagers with discreetly Christian lyrics and a crisp, tight attack when they were signed to Tooth & Nail Records in 1994. They released three albums for the label and then defected to A&M Records, where bigger budgets afforded them grander production and a busy touring schedule. Being exposed to enthusiastic crowds during the late-'90s heyday of pop/punk paid off, and by 2005, the band had built up such a loyal following that they decided to leave A&M and record independently, pursuing a leaner punk sound. MxPx also helped pave the way for a bundle of emotionally driven pop/punk acts with lyrics that, while not expressly religious, dealt openly with matters of faith.
