Engineer: Dean Baskerville; Bob Stark Producer: Dean Baskerville; A.P. Alexakis; Nathaniel Kunkel Distributor: Universal Distribution Notes: Personnel: Art Alexakis (vocals, guitar, banjo, mandola, percussion); Josh Crawley (vocals, keyboards); Sam Hudson (vocals); Tommy Stewart (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Nathaniel Kunkel. Instead of releasing another full-blown collection of new songs, Everclear issued In a Different Light in the fall of 2009. Harking back to the earliest days of rock & roll, when rock & rollers cut new versions of their old hits whenever they signed to a new label, Everclear redo their old tunes for 429 Records, but where Fats Domino and Chuck Berry pretty much stuck to the letter of their original hits, Everclear revamp these tunes, not so much making them into unplugged versions but turning them into something studiously mature and age appropriate, with the energy dialed down and the palette expanded yet muted. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Biding time between full-blown collections of new songs, Everclear released In a Different Light in the fall of 2009. Harking back to the earliest days of rock & roll, when rock & rollers cut new versions of their old hits whenever they signed to a new label, Everclear redo their old tunes for 429 Records, but where Fats Domino and Chuck Berry pretty much stuck to the letter of their original hits, Everclear revamp these tunes, not so much making them into unplugged versions but turning them into something studiously mature, age appropriate for graying alt-rockers. No song here is drastically rearranged; rather, the energy is dialed down and the palette is expanded yet muted, resulting in an album that plays like a faded memory of a greatest-hits album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
In the aftermath of the Nirvana-led grunge explosion of the early 1990s, Everclear's grunged-out roots rock brought it all back home without a trace of pretension. At first glance, songs like "Santa Monica" and "Everything to Everyone" are deceptively simple-sounding, grunge pop affairs. By the end of the '90s, however, people listened a little harder and began to realize that bandleader Art Alexakis was actually a major songwriter of his time.
