Performer: Dion
Distributor: Sony Music Distribution ( Notes: Compilation producers: Mitchell Cohen, Bruce Dickinson. Recorded between 1962 & 1968. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). This is a nifty little Dion compilation of tunes recorded at the height of his career between 1962 and 1964 for Columbia Records and issued by their parent company Sony. What makes it interesting is that it has both the doo wop and early rock hits like "Ruby Baby," and "Donna the Prima Donna," as well as lesser-known titles from the period such as "A Sunday Kind of Love," and his self-penned gem "Will Love Ever Come My Way" and "Unloved, Unwanted Me." Additionally, there is one track from Dion's first period of singing the blues with his very fine version of Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man." There's a little bit of everything on this ultra-cheap set and it provides a decent and diverse introduction to one of the greatest if underappreciated singers and songwriters of the 20th century. ~ Thom Jurek
Not unlike his friend Bobby Darin, Dion Dimucci was a native New Yorker who started out as a rock & roller in the 1950s and went through a series of drastic stylistic changes. He began as a doo wop hitmaker with his group the Belmonts, turning out such smashes as "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer." Over the ensuing decades, the artistically restless Dion tried his hand at blues, folk-rock, Phil Spector-produced pop, and hard-edged rock & roll, managing to maintain his credibility and integrity all along the way, and eventually getting inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
