Recording information: Dave's Room, North Hollywood, CA. Blues Traveler have come a long way from their jam-band origins, their music evolving slowly but surely over the years, and NORTH HOLLYWOOD SHOOTOUT seems like the culmination of that journey. Far from the riff-based blues-rock tunes and extended, groove-happy jams of their early days, NORTH HOLLYWOOD SHOOTOUT features the band's most thoughtful, concise, melodically sophisticated songcraft to date. Subtle textures and ballad tempi dominate the album, though Blues Traveler kicks into some hard-hitting rock & roll on a couple of tunes. SHOOTOUT tells the world that this is more than just a band with a "sound," and it presents the songs to back that assertion up.
Billboard (p.41) - "The enduring jam-rockers explore an appropriately soulful side on their Verve debut, an upbeat, major-chord affair..."
Blues Traveler personified the second wave of jam bands that arose in the late '80s and early '90s. It was the Grateful Dead that turned the idea of playing a different, heavily improvised set of its tunes every night into a fine art. Like the Dead, Blues Traveler employs a hybrid of a number of classic American styles, from country to folk and blues, delivered in an idiosyncratic style. Led by the mighty singer/harp player John Popper, Blues Traveler had personality and appeal, but it wasn't until their hit "Runaround" that the group was catapulted into the public eye.
