Artist: Barbra Streisand Distributor: Sony Music Distribution ( Notes: IN MY LIFETIME is a three-disc box set with 71 tracks spanning Neil Diamond's career from 1958 to the mid-1990s. Its many rarities include several demos and acetates from the late '50s and early '60s, mono versions of Diamond's hits for Bang Records in the '60s, and tracks from an unreleased album recorded in the 1980s. Personnel includes: Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand (vocals). Producers include: Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, Bob Gaudio, Neil Diamond, Tom Catalano. Compilation producers: Peter Fletcher, Al Quaglieri, David Mitson, Lawrence Cohn. Recorded between 1958 and 1996. Includes liner notes by Neil Diamond and David Wild. Digitally remastered by David Mitson (Sony Music Studios, Santa Monica, California). Until the release of the three-CD box set IN MY LIFETIME, no single set had ever collected all of Neil Diamond's original hit recordings. Licensing conflicts among Bang, MCA, and Columbia--the three companies for which Diamond has recorded--previously prevented the release of a definitive collection, requiring such sets as THE GREATEST HITS (1966 TO 1992) to instead substitute inferior live recordings for the originals. For this fact alone, IN MY LIFETIME is an invaluable box that will satisfy anyone interested in a definitive overview of Diamond's work. His entire career arc receives ample coverage here, from his days as a Brill Building pop tunesmith through his artistically ambitious early 70's period to his later incarnation as a middle-of-the-road balladeer. As an added bonus, IN MY LIFETIME includes several songwriting demo recordings; many predating Diamond's first big hit, "Cherry, Cherry," and a number of alternate takes of hits. The accompanying booklet includes Diamond's comments on each of the 71 recordings included here as well as a wide assortment of photographs.
With a career as a hitmaker stretching across the decades, Neil Diamond has purveyed catchy, three-chord pop/rock, progressive singer/songwriter material, middle-of-the-road balladry, and even traditional country. He started out as a Brill Building hitmaker; a songwriter for hire, he worked alongside the likes of Carole King and Gerry Goffin, and penned hits for the Monkees and Jay & the Americans. His solo career took off in the mid 1960s and made him one of America's most successful recording artists and concert attractions for a long time to come. Even decades down the road, younger groups such as UB40 in the '80s, Urge Overkill in the '90s, and Smash Mouth in the 2000's were still scoring hits with Diamond's evergreen compositions.
