Medley: The Coventry Carol/God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen: The Coventry Carol / God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Chet Atkins
Producer: Chet Atkins Distributor: BMG (distributor) Notes: Originally released on RCA (2423). Personnel: Chet Atkins (vocals, guitar). Chet Atkins' renditions of these beloved Christmas standards invoke the spirit of the season. He celebrates life, and Christmas, in styles by turns jazzy, (Western) swinging, and classical. For many of the traditional Christmas songs, such as "O Come All Ye Faithful" and the medley, "The Coventry Carol/God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen," Atkins plays a nylon-stringed acoustic guitar in a classical vein. On the other hand, on Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" and "Jingle Bell Rock," Atkins performs using the country swing style for which he is so well known. In whatever style he plays, with the subtle accompaniment of the Anita Kerr singers Chet Atkins captures the essence of Christmas with every note.
Among fingerstyle country guitar players, perhaps only Merle Travis can rival Chet Atkins, whose distinctive sound defined an entire generation of Nashville country. Atkins has played an equally important role as a record producer. As RCA's chief Nashville producer in the '50s and '60s, Atkins oversaw sessions for Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers, Jim Reeves, Don Gibson, and countless others. He was one of the chief architects of the polished country style that came to be known as the "Nashville sound," but his own productions were more tasteful and appealing than those for which the genre is frequently lambasted. Atkins remained active into the '90s, but succumbed to cancer in 2001.
