Disc: 1
To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Bobby Darin
Producer: Michael Cuscuna (Compilation)... Distributor: EMI Music Distribution Notes: Personnel: Bobby Darin (vocals). Audio Remasterer: Ron McMaster. Arrangers: Gerald Wilson; Richard Wess; Billy May; Bob Florence. This disc captures the chameleonic Bobby Darin in his most popular phase, that of the Sinatra-fixated big-band singer. In the first half of the 1960s, during his tenure at Capitol Records, Darin (who had started out in rock & roll) trafficked in a style that had gone out of fashion, but the young man from the Bronx, NY nevertheless brought the classic swing sound to the fore once again for a brief time. Though the mercurial Darin would go on to record folk-rock, country, and more, he rarely sounded as at ease as he does on "I'm Beginning to See the Light" or "The Good Life." Even on an ostensibly melancholic tune such as "This Nearly Was Mine," Darin injects so much joie de vivre that it comes off as pure exultation. As compilations go, THE SWINGING SIDE OF BOBBY DARIN provides an excellent portrait of what made the former Walden Robert Cassotto a natural swing stylist.
Bronx-born singer and songwriter Bobby Darin was always a man who bucked convention. Though he started out writing and singing rock & roll hits such as "Splish Splash" in the 1950s, he stood out from the crowd in the '60s as a post-Sinatra crooner. By the end of the decade, he had reinvented himself yet again, as a credible writer and interpreter of folk-rock material, often of a social-protest nature. The multi-talented Darin also had numerous successful film roles in the '60s, and continued performing until his 1973 death from a heart condition.
