Performer: Gilberto Gil
Distributor: Caroline Distribution Notes: Another album on Wrasse from a Brazilian legend, this one collects the early work (before 1976) of Gilberto Gil, one of the major founders of the tropicalismo movement. While a little out of order, the pieces here represent essentially all of the aspects of the early Gilberto Gil as well as the early tropicalismo sound in general. His first hit ("Louvacao") is here, as is his farewell to Brazil before self-exile in London, "Aquele Abrao." Sad songs of homesickness from his stay in London, a song or two from after his return and reunion with other major players and friends. From the dramatic to the soft, from the joyous to the heartbroken, it's all in here. Gilberto Gil is a legendary voice and songcrafter, and this album can show newcomers why and remind fans of the roots of his sound. ~ Adam Greenberg
With a career that dates back to the early 1960s, Gilberto Gil is one of the major innovators of Brazilian pop. A founder of the Tropicalia movement, he has embraced a huge variety of influences, from traditional regional styles of the Brazilian Northeast to jazz, reggae, disco, rock, and African music. Romantic, political, and downright funky, Gil always has an eye on both the past and the future.
