Performer: Gilberto Gil
Engineer: Mario Possollo; Leco Producer: Bene Fonteles; Gilberto Gil (Compilation) Distributor: E1 Distribution (USA) Notes: Personnel: Gilberto Gil (guitar). Originally recorded in 1999, this set features Gilberto Gil, a founding father of the Tropicalia movement, singing songs he had written for the singers Chico Buarque and Elis Regina, as well as for his own solo releases, during the previous three decades. In a rare, stripped-down recording featuring just his voice and guitar, Gil displays his vocal and instrumental mastery on a set of subtle, sophisticated songs such as "Retiros Espirituais" and the jazzy "Superhomem--A Cancao" that need no translation to be fully appreciated.
Dirty Linen (p.81) - "The result is the Bahia-born master's most intimate outing yet."
With a career that dates back to the early 1960s, Gilberto Gil is one of the major innovators of Brazilian pop. A founder of the Tropicalia movement, he has embraced a huge variety of influences, from traditional regional styles of the Brazilian Northeast to jazz, reggae, disco, rock, and African music. Romantic, political, and downright funky, Gil always has an eye on both the past and the future.
