Performer: Gilberto Gil
Distributor: City Hall Notes: EXPRESSO 2222 is the sound of a joyous homecoming. Gilberto Gil had spent the previous two years in political exile in England, and this 1972 album was his first release after returning. Its percolating grooves, full-band arrangements, and effervescent feeling stand in stark contrast to the melancholy, acoustic sparseness of his preceding self-titled album. Bits of the rock influences he picked up in London are brought to bear here within the context of more traditionally Brazilian styles for a rich stylistic mix.
With a career that dates back to the early 1960s, Gilberto Gil is one of the major innovators of Brazilian pop. A founder of the Tropicalia movement, he has embraced a huge variety of influences, from traditional regional styles of the Brazilian Northeast to jazz, reggae, disco, rock, and African music. Romantic, political, and downright funky, Gil always has an eye on both the past and the future.
