Performer: Caetano Veloso
Producer: Pedro Sa; Moreno Veloso + 2 Distributor: WEA (Distributor) Notes: Personnel: Caetano Veloso (vocals, steel guitar, nylon-string guitar); Pedro S (electric guitar); Ricardo Dias Gomes (Fender Rhodes piano, bass instrument); Marcelo Callado (drums). If Caetano Veloso's 2004 album A FOREIGN SOUND was a smoothly accomplished salute to his influences in the popular music of the northern hemisphere, his 2007 release, CE, is proof that he hasn't lost his cutting edge. Its skeletal sound, co-produced with his son Moreno, rarely adopts the complex yet soothing rhythms of Veloso's native Bahia, instead laying bare his distinctive lyrics and perfectly nuanced vocals with quirky, rock- and punk-oriented beats and electric guitar. Songs such as the hushed, "Minhas Lagrimas" and the sophisticated, jazzy "Porque" are the exception here, with the singer exploring a more rock & roll direction on the aptly-named "Rocks," while similarly appropriately blending Caribbean and Brazilian rhythms on "Musa Hybrida." Veloso's lyrics, too, have lost none of their eccentric sting over the years, with "Odeio" and "Um Sonho" both displaying an edgy eroticism, and "Outro" bristling with anger.
The Wire (p.63) - "Veloso's voice is, as always, an instrument of singular winsomeness, coloured with regret and yearning..."
Down Beat (p.62) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "It's one of his greatest vocal performances ever. alternating between rare tenderness and consonant grit..."
Caetano Veloso is a giant of Brazilian pop, often compared to figures such as Bob Dylan and John Lennon--even if the comparison doesn't quite translate. Veloso began in the late 1960s as one of the primary instigators of the "tropicalia" movement--an intentionally provocative collision of musical and cultural influences--for which he rapidly ascended to fame and notoriety. For years he was hardly known outside Brazil, but in time he became an international star renowned for his musical creativity and poetic soul.
