Notes: Personnel: Roosevelt Skyes (vocals, piano); Memphis Slim (piano). Reissue producer: Matt Walters. Recorded at Cue Recording Studios, Chicago, Illinois on January 13, 1961. Originally released on Folkways (3827). Includes liner notes by Valerie Wilmer and Matt Walters. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Personnel: Roosevelt Sykes (vocals, piano). Liner Note Authors: Valerie Wilmer; Matt Walters. Recording information: Cue Recording Studios, Chicago, Ill (01/13/1961). Other than a cameo piano appearance by his producer (and peer) Memphis Slim on the appropriately titled "Memphis Slim Rock," and this is a stellar solo outing by the prolific pianist from 1961. He belts out a booming "Sweet Old Chicago," takes a trip to Chicago's South side on "47th Street Jive," and indulges in a little ribald imagery for "The Sweet Root Man." ~ Bill Dahl
Down Beat (1/96, p.49) - 3 Stars - Good - "...he certainly knows how to sing and make the ivories dance in an entertaining fashion..." Dirty Linen (4-5/96, p.61) - "...That the engineers got this much sound out of 35-year-old blues recordings is nothing short of astounding...it rocks..." Living Blues (3-4/96, pp.82-83) - "...[This] album is solid, and fans of piano blues are sure to be pleased..."
