This rather mysterious CD -- which comes with full personnel credits and even a listing for where it was mixed, but nothing about when and where it was recorded -- is a pretty fair representation of Steeleye Span's live sound circa the mid-'90s, which was fairly impressive. The repertory bridges a quarter-century in the group's history, though not nearly as neatly or comprehensively as the two-CD concert document The Journey -- instead, there's a tendency to jump around the various corners of the group's repertory. It's all played and sung very well and slickly, with a good deal of intensity and passion, and their history is represented as well as one could reasonably expect from a mere 15 tracks (but not, alas, "Now We Are Six"). There is little audience ambience, however, which limits the excitement inherent in the listening, and reduces the otherwise solid inherent appeal of this CD. ~ Bruce Eder
On a par with Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span was one of the premier British folk-rock bands in the 1960s and '70s. Like Fairport, it combined traditional U.K. folk songs with a rock-influenced, occasionally electric edge. Though the group has seen numerous personnel changes throughout its long career (which continues into the 21st century), its roster has included some of the biggest names in British folk, including Martin Carthy and longtime linchpin Maddy Prior.
