On 2007's MYTHMAKER, Skinny Puppy's second studio album since its post-millennial reunion, the veteran Canadian industrial act presents another set of sharp, scathing tunes. As on '04's THE GREATER WRONG OF THE RIGHT, the group--essentially vocalist Nivek Ogre and multi-instrumentalists Cevin Key and Mark Walk--often tempers its harsh sound with atmospheric synth lines and dance-oriented beats, as on the darkly dreamy "Haze" and the burbling "Pasturn." While fans of Skinny Puppy's fierce 1980s material may be reluctant to return to the fold, MYTHMAKER proves that, decades later, the group still stays true to its unapologetically defiant and grim aesthetic.
Uncut (p.95) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Gnarled, sinewy, cyber-chewing techno that's driven by the rage of vocalist/producer Kevin 'Ogre' Ogilvie."
Alternative Press (p.194) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[The album] adds classical-influenced piano and guitar. This sonic expansion is the best strategy the band could have pursued."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.47) - "An acquired, disturbing taste, but a frequently compelling one too."
Vancouver's Skinny Puppy took the somewhat scattershot rage of industrial pioneers like Throbbing Gristle and gave it focus--exploring the endless catalogue of evils of which mankind is capable, all in lyrically graphic detail. Though not as commercially successful as the like-minded if somewhat more rock-oriented Ministry, Skinny Puppy never wavered from their extreme vision. After producing their savage brand of sonic assault for nearly a decade, the band disbanded in 1995 after the heroin overdose death of keyboardist Dwayne Goettel, but reformed in 2000. Skinny Puppy's THE GREATER WRONG OF THE RIGHT album/tour drew the ire of Republicans during the 2004 election for its musical disparagement of President George W. Bush.
