Notes: Personnel includes: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar); Urubamba, The Jessy Dixon Singers. Paul Simon's 1974 concert recording LIVE RHYMIN' is an intimate offering of some of Simon's greatest hits up until then, including "Homeward Bound," "Mother and Child Reunion," "American Tune" and others. Simon is in fine voice and accompanies himself on acoustic guitar. His guitar parts are subtle and sophisticated and always in motion, choreographing his songs. He is joined here on some numbers by the Peruvian acoustic instrumental group Urubamba and on others by gospel vocal group the Jesse Dixon Singers. Even back then Simon was mixing and matching different musical cultures and using them as settings for his songs. As always, his musical experiments are intriguing and enjoyable.
Besides being one-half of pop's legendary duo Simon & Garfunkel would be enough for most people, but Paul Simon went on to reap just as much acclaim and success as a solo artist. In the 1970s, he was at the vanguard of the singer-songwriter movement, marrying brainy lyrics with sophisticated pop music. In the '80s, he was one of the first pop artists to successfully combine world music into his sound, resulting in the South African flavor of Simon's landmark GRACELAND album, and subsequent flirtations with Brazilian and Latin styles.
