Performer: Saxon
Engineer: Kevin Beamish; Bruce Barris Producer: Kevin Beamish Distributor: Caroline Distribution Notes: Heavy Metal rockers from the U.K., Saxon, present CRUSADER, featuring 10 tracks on this German import release. Saxon: Steve Dawson (bass guitar); Graham Oliver, Nigel Glockler, Paul Quinn , Biff Byford. Personnel: Biff Byford (vocals); Graham Oliver, Paul Quinn (guitar); Nigel Glockler (drums). Recording information: Sound City, Los Angeles, CA. It's hard to pinpoint the reasons for Saxon's gradual fall from stardom, but by the time they released 1984's Crusader, the band had obviously stopped leading the New Wave of British Heavy Metal with its aggressive biker anthems, and fallen in line behind Iron Maiden's epic historical themes and more complex song structures. It did them no good. Crusader was actually a slight improvement from the songwriting perspective, but reveals a band which obviously takes itself too seriously. In fact, they only really manage to rock out like the old days on a few tracks like "A Little Bit of What You Fancy" and "Bad Boys (Like to Rock'n'Roll)." ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
Along with Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, Saxon was one of the key bands in the early-1980s scene known as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Using the hard-rock template laid out by Deep Purple and Black Sabbath but playing a faster, louder, and more theatrically bombastic version of it, Saxon's sound would influence a plethora of metal bands--from Megadeth and Bathory to Metallica and the Darkness--for decades to come.
