Notes: A remarkably versatile singer, Lou Rawls distinguished himself in soul, but was also adept at performing pop, blues, and jazz. This excellent 21-track Capitol compilation forgoes the latter two styles and draws from his 1960s/'70s recordings, presenting listeners with the deep-voiced performer's most accessible classics, including, of course, the gloriously smooth "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine," as well as the funky "Dead End Street" and a passionate version of "On Broadway." As an introduction to the effortlessly charming vocalist, this 2006 collection (released shortly after his death) is ideal. It's also a nice companion volume to another comp released the same year, BEST OF LOU RAWLS: THE CAPITOL JAZZ & BLUES SESSIONS.

Chicago-born soulster Lou Rawls was one of the most popular and versatile singers in pop music during the 1960s and '70s. His distinctive baritone, as well-suited to pop and jazz as it was to straight soul, formed a seductive blend of silk and gravel, and made a fan out of, among others, Frank Sinatra. Rawls lent his unique style to some of the biggest names in the music business, including David Axelrod and Gamble & Huff. His later career was marked by occasional acting gigs as well his work with the United Negro College Fund. When Rawls died of lung cancer in early 2006, the music world lost a genuine treasure.
