Producer: Frank Collura (Compilation)

Notes: When Dr. Dre opened the 1988 classic, STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, with the proclamation, "You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge," N.W.A. was issuing their own unapologetic parental advisory--though perhaps not the one Tipper Gore had in mind. N.W.A. was one of the first groups in the rap genre to excite suburban white kids and scare their parents on such a mass scale. Though Ice Cube, MC Ren, Eazy-E, Yella, and Dr. Dre spent less than half a decade recording together, the crew birthed a monstrous style that's been with hip-hop ever since--namely gangsta rap. Nothing is sacred and no taboos are out of reach when these five artists are at their most ruthless. Ice Cube "never should've been let out the penitentiary," just as Eazy-E is bound to "smother your mother." Dr. Dre's early production work--experimenting with hard-thumping drum tracks and computerized effects on tracks like "Dopeman" and "Alwayz Into Somethin"--laid the groundwork for what would later be called G-Funk. This 2006 greatest-hits collection brings together 17 ferocious cuts from the group's three LPs and one EP from 1987 to 1991, as well the 2000 reunion track "Chin Check," featuring Snoop filling in for the late Eazy-E. DVD Features: DVD Includes: 1. Straight Outta Compton (Street Version) 2. Ice Cube Interview: Hypocrisy Of Censorship 3. Express Yourself (Long\Execution Version) 4. Dr. Dre, Dj Yella & Mc Ren Interview-Compton And "Gangsta Rap" 5. 100 Miles And Runnin' (New Street Version) 6. Dj Yella Interview (Parental Advisory Stickering) 7. Appetite For Destruction (Extended Street Version) 8. Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Dj Yella & Mc Ren Interview-Sex, Change Of Lifestyle 9. Alwaysz Into Somethin' 10. Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Dj Yella & Mc Ren Interview-Approach To Danger And Arguing In The Studio 11. Ice Cube Interview- Role Models, News As An Influence, Telling The Truth Positivity
Q (p.121) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The group who put West Coast hip hop on the map....[This] includes all their greatest moments..."
Springing without warning from a late-1980s crack war-torn Los Angeles, N.W.A. made their neighborhood infamous with STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON. The group--which included Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Eazy-E--was among the first on the West Coast to address street-oriented, sociopolitical themes in a confrontational manner. Though N.W.A. proved too volatile to hold together, its individual members went on to become the biggest names in West Coast hip-hop.
