Notes: This collection has plenty of Harry Nilsson gems, including his definitive covers of Badfinger's "Without You" and Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'," as well as Nilsson's own version of "One," a huge hit for Three Dog Night, the interesting "I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City," and the lovely "Without Her," but it lacks some obvious tracks as well, including "Coconut," "Cuddly Toy" (a key album track for the Monkees), the fascinatingly realized "1941," the infectious and cartoon-like "Me and My Arrow," and his hit dance single "Jump into the Fire," so it doesn't make the best introduction to this unique artist, although there's still plenty here to convince anyone that Nilsson was a truly gifted writer and musician and definitely one of a kind. ~ Steve Leggett This collection has plenty of Harry Nilsson gems, including his definitive covers of Badfinger's "Without You" and Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'," as well as Nilsson's own version of "One," a huge hit for Three Dog Night, but it lacks some obvious tracks, as well, including "Coconut," "Cuddly Toy" (a key album track for the Monkees), the fascinatingly realized "1941," the infectious and cartoon-like "Me and My Arrow," and his hit dance single "Jump into the Fire," so it doesn't make the best introduction to this unique artist, although there's still plenty here to convince anyone that Nilsson was truly gifted and definitely one of a kind. ~ Steve Leggett
Though he's best known for his versions of other people's songs (Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'," Badfinger's "Without You," an entire album of Randy Newman songs), Nilsson was a skilled composer, and is recognized as a pop craftsman of the first order. As a songwriter, he placed tunes with the Monkees, the Yardbirds and others. As a singer he managed to wring greatly expressive range from his uniquely flexible voice, and is recognized as a pop craftsman of the first order.
