He was young and impressionable. You don't hold New Edition against Bobby Brown, do you? The point is that Ricky Martin is a fully-realized, mature artist who has a lot to offer to the world of Latin music. VUELVE shows the range of Martin's talents, from the propulsive Latin rhythms of "Por Arriba, Por Abajo" and "Lola, Lola" to the Anglicized power balladry of the title track, with plenty of stops in between. Somehow, it all fits together seamlessly. One of the reasons may be the economy of the tunes; Martin likes 'em short and sweet, and nothing on VUELVE sticks around long enough to wear out its welcome.
Q (8/02, p.146) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...He sounds keen....'Por Arriba Por Abajo' ia a clattering treat and 'Lola Lola' marks the first appearance of the 'Livin La Vida Loca' tune..."
Vibe (5/98, p.138) - "...VUELVE blends rich texture...and tropical polyrhythms...with Ricky's soft tenor and mainstream appeal....A mellifluous set of ditties with just enough flavor to please most any easy listener..."
Getting his start as part of teenyboppers Menudo in the '80s, and staying in the public's eye as an actor on General Hospital, Ricky Martin launched his own solo career by the late-'90s. Nobody could have predicted Martin's meteoric rise, topping the charts and selling out arenas on the strength of his monster Latin dance hit "Livin' La Vida Loca."
