Producers include: Los Lobos, T-Bone Burnette, Steve Berlin, Mitchell Froom, Hal Willner. Engineers include: Keith Keller, Cesar Rosas, David Wells. It says quite a bit about the grace, dignity and power of Los Lobos that, with just a half dozen albums to their name at the time, they deserved a career reappraisal such as this. Beautifully assembled, JUST ANOTHER BAND FROM EAST L.A. is not to be confused with their self-released debut album of the same name. The two discs follow a fairly chronological course and the set further benefits from the inclusion of live tracks and previously unreleased studio cuts. From traditional Mexican songs to Marvin Gaye, Los Lobos invest heart and soul in everything they play. They're also able to shine equally on stage and in the studio. Though Los Lobos have found a fair measure of success in the marketplace over the years, they remain sadly under- appreciated. A true American treasure, this band exudes fire, warmth and a breadth of spirit rare in any band. And they've been at it since the early seventies. This is an essential collection by an essential band.
Rolling Stone (11/11/93, p.77) - "...[JUST ANOTHER BAND FROM EAST L.A.] captures the full range of [Los Lobos'] sound. Hard core fans may quibble with some of the selections, but the net effect is stunning..." Spin (11/93, pp.132-133) - Highly Recommended - "...[JUST ANOTHER BAND FROM EAST L.A.] refeshingly leaves some classic numbers aside....Los Lobos resolve[s] their identity crises and start to just play like masters..." Entertainment Weekly (9/10/93, p.72) - "...plain proof that this is a consummate American band, and that David Hidalgo is one of the most underrated singers in pop..." - Rating: A- Q (11/93, p.146) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...An ample statement to [Los Lobos'] varied career..." Dirty Linen (6-7/94, p.59) - "...Los Lobos cuts loose on this superb hand-picked sampling..." Audio Magazine (12/93, p.112) - "...this two-disc compilation affirms that Los Lobos is in reality the best band to emerge from Tinsletown in 25 years...."
They began playing traditional Mexican music in their native East L.A. in the mid-'70s, but Los Lobos were galvanized by the California punk movement. By the early '80s they were a rock band to be reckoned with, purveying a highly charged brand of roots-rock distinctively colored by conjunto and Latin shadings. Their '90s work with producer Mitchell Froom found them heading into new worlds of textural sonic exploration.
