To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: King's X
Engineer: Steve Ames Producer: Sam Taylor Distributor: WEA (Distributor) Notes: King's X: Ty Tabor (vocals, guitar, dulcimer, sitar); Doug Pinnick (vocals, bass); Jerry Gaskill (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Max Dyer (cello); Little Willie T. AKA Sam Taylor (keyboards). Recorded at Rampart Studios, Houston, Texas. King's X just missed a commercial breakthrough with their 1990 release, FAITH HOPE LOVE, so expectations ran high for this self-titled follow-up two years later. While the King's X faithful snapped up the album upon its release, it failed to give the band that extra needed push. The melodic "Black Flag" was a favorite on MTV's "Headbanger's Ball" program, but the band didn't push the musical boundaries on KING'S X as they had on their previous releases. Still, there were plenty of highlights, such as "The World Around Me," "Prisoner," "Lost in Germany," and "Not Just for the Dead" (the latter was unjustly never issued as a single).
Rolling Stone (4/30/92, p.56) - 3.5 Stars - Very Good - "...there's a lot to be happy about...a cloud of sound dense enough to wallow in..."
Entertainment Weekly (3/20/92, p.68) - "...combine progressive rock with a wonderful melodic sensibility..." - Rating: A-
Q (5/92, p.79) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...a return to peak form...slabs of weighty guitar/bass/drums draped with strong vocal harmonies, soaring guitar solos, inventive arrangements and accomplished songwriting..."
Power trio King's X combine Beatlesque melodies with fierce hard rock and progressive leanings. Formed in the mid-1980s, the band emerged--along with Living Colour--as one of the few metal bands with an African-American frontman. The group's initial videos garnered MTV airplay, leading to increased exposure and lengthy tours. Since the early '90s, King's X has maintained a slightly lower profile, but they still have a very devoted following, eager for the next release to feature the band's genre-hopping sound.
