To listen to sound clips, you'll need the most current version of the
Performer: Joy Division
Engineer: Martin Hannett Producer: Martin Hannett Distributor: Redeye Music Distribution Notes: While the specter of Joy Division loomed over nearly everything that came out of Factory Records in the years following the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis, casting an equally impressive shadow was in-house producer Martin Hannett. Hannett's unique production aesthetic, which gave everything he touched a deeply majestic tone, was as much a defining part of the Joy Division (and subsequently Factory) sound as anything else . A useful curiosity, then, is the collection MARTIN HANNETT'S PERSONAL MIXES. In addition to alternate (and Hannett's preferred) mixes of the Joy Division classics "Autosuggestion," "Heart And Soul," and "Passover," among others, fans get a fly-on-the-wall opportunity to experience Hannett and Joy Division's creative process. The collection includes truncated song takes, studio chatter, and sound sample creations. While this set is certainly aimed at Joy Division/Factory diehards, it remains a fascinating collection for any curious music lover.
Joy Division virtually defined the term "post-punk." They combined punk's rawness and iconoclasm with an artier sensibility that encompassed poetic lyrics, existentialism, and a dark moody mix of guitars and keyboards that was a major influence on goth and industrial music. After singer Ian Curtis's suicide in 1980, the rest of the band went on to even greater success as the poppier, more electronic-oriented New Order. Although they burned brief, their indelible imprint revived over two decades later as inspiration for a whole movement of indie rock on both sides of the ocean.
