Performer: Louis Jordan
Distributor: Allegro Corporation (Dist Notes: Personnel includes: Louis Jordan (vocals, alto saxophone). Recorded between 1940 & 1946. This single CD features Louis Jordan & His Tympany 5 in 29 mostly concise performances that they recorded during 1940-1946 for World Broadcasting Transcriptions. These noncommercial performances, some of which are brief instrumentals and quite a few of which are songs that Jordan never recorded for his regular records, are quite enjoyable. The music falls between swing and early R&B, and really shows off Jordan's vocals and alto sax playing well. Unfortunately, the personnel is unidentified, but Jordan tended to be most of the show anyway. Louis Jordan fans will want these formerly rare performances. ~ Scott Yanow
The most successful and influential purveyor of saxophone-driven jump blues, Louis Jordan was also one of the crucial transitional figures between the swing era and R&B. Although he started out mainly as a saxophonist with bandleaders such as Bessie Smith, Chick Webb, and Louis Armstrong, he found a niche singing blues and novelty tunes. After a string of hits throughout the 1940s, Jordan eventually found himself outpaced by the very rock & roll he had helped inspire.
