Notes: Hot Tuna: Jorma Kaukonen (vocals, guitar); Jack Casady (vocals, bass guitar). Liner Note Author: Dennis E. Powell. Recording information: New Orleans House, Berkeley, CA (09/16/1968-??/??/1978); Theatre 1839, San Francisco, CA (09/16/1968-??/??/1978). Photographers: Dave Bannon; Roger Ressmeyer; Barry Berenson. Arrangers: Jack Casady; Jorma Kaukonen. Including live and studio selections from the band's 1970s albums, this best-of showcases the spectrum of the Jefferson Airplane offshoot Hot Tuna's styles, from the gentle acoustic blues of songs like the Reverend Gary Davis's "Death Don't Have No Mercy" (also often performed by the Grateful Dead), and "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning," to the heavier R&B of "Come Back Baby" and the rolling blues of "Sunrise Dance With the Devil."
Dirty Linen (p.85) - "[With] the addition of eight more tracks, you've got yourself a simmering casserole of Hot Tuna delights."
Hot Tuna began in 1970 as a side project of Jefferson Airplane members Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, who wanted to put aside psychedelia to explore their blues roots. Their format has frequently changed over the years (shifting back and forth from acoustic to electric), as has their personnel (the version of the band featuring fiddler Papa John Creach is beloved to fans), but their blues-rock sound remains consistent.
