Performer: Hot Tuna
Distributor: Rock Bottom Distributing Notes: Originally released on Grunt. All songs have been digitally remastered. While Hot Tuna will forever be known first and foremost as an acoustic-based outfit, their 1976 release, HOPPKORV, showed that he band could rock with the best of them as well. HOPPKORV remains one of Tuna's most straightforward releases compositionally and musically, as none of the tracks are extended by lengthy jams, giving the entire album an enticing "wham bam thank you m'am" feel. Kaukonen and Casady get back to basics on such highlights as covers of Chuck Berry's "Talkin' Bout You" and Buddy Holly's "It's So Easy," while the Kaukonen-penned "Watch the North Wind Rise" remains one of Hot Tuna's best all-time originals. Fans of blues-based hard rock (a la Led Zeppelin) should definitely give HOPPKORV a spin.
Hot Tuna began in 1970 as a side project of Jefferson Airplane members Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, who wanted to put aside psychedelia to explore their blues roots. Their format has frequently changed over the years (shifting back and forth from acoustic to electric), as has their personnel (the version of the band featuring fiddler Papa John Creach is beloved to fans), but their blues-rock sound remains consistent.
