Johnny Gore And The <
Performer: Hall & Oates
Producer: Todd Rundgren Distributor: Phantom Import Distributi Notes: Hall & Oates: Daryl Hall, John Oates. Personnel: Hall & Oates (vocals, mandolin, keyboards); Todd Rundgren (guitar, background vocals); Don York (keyboards); John Siegler (bass instrument); John G. Wilcox (drums). After crafting the fitfully accomplished blue-eyed Philly soul-pop of Abandoned Luncheonette, Hall & Oates retreated to a more rock-oriented sound on War Babies, recorded with producer Todd Rundgren. Some of the tracks work, but the duo's performance sounds forced throughout much of the record. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Mojo (Publisher) (p.138) - "[A] glam-smitten, acid-laced and frazzled kind of blue-eyed soul..."
The pre-eminent white soul duo of the 1970s and '80s, Daryl Hall and John Oates ruled pop radio for years with their hook-ridden hits. The pair eventually moved beyond their initial inspirations--primarily Motown groups like the Temptations and Philly soul artists like Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes--and incorporated pop, rock and disco into a sound that managed to be both commercial and soulful.
