Performer: Erasure
Distributor: WEA (Distributor) Notes: Erasure: Andy Bell, Vince Clark. Producers include: Flood, Stephen Hague, Erasure, Gareth Jones, Mark Sounders. Recorded between 1986 & 2003. Buoyed by a new remix of "Oh L'Amour" and a bonus megamix CD, HITS! ups the ante from their previous best-of collection, 1992's ERASURE POP! The latter portion of the record contains arguably less exclamatory fare from their mid-to-late '90s records. However, standout tracks from that period like "Freedom" and "In My Arms," as well as the bulk of their Abba covers compilation and a rendition of Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill" serve as a nice complement to the set's first half, which is frontloaded with the usual '80s classics like "A Little Respect" and "Chains Of Love."
After founding seminal synth-pop outfits Depeche Mode and Yaz, Vince Clarke joined forces with singer Andy Bell in the mid-1980s to form Erasure, combining Clarke's melodic electro-pop pedigree with a more danceable approach. The duo scored numerous hits throughout the second half of the '80s. Though their chart presence diminished somewhat in the '90s, the pair continued tenaciously into the 21st century. Latter-day releases found Erasure saluting their influences, with an EP of Abba tunes in '92 and a covers album, OTHER PEOPLE'S SONGS, in 2003.
