Performer: Erasure
Distributor: WEA (Distributor) Notes: Erasure: Andy Bell , Vince Clarke (various instruments). Issued by the Rhino label in 2009, the three-CD/one-DVD TOTAL POP! box set surveys the first two decades of recordings by the renowned British synth-pop act Erasure. Disc One presents the remastered version of the POP! compilation, which visits the U.K. duo's hit-making era of 1986-92 (see the buoyant singles "Chains of Love" and "A Little Respect"), while Disc Two features the finest latter-day tracks by Andy Bell and Vince Clarke, including a pulsing cover of Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill" and the club-ready "I Could Fall in Love With You." The remaining audio disc is devoted to live Erasure performances spanning the years 1987 to 2007, and the DVD covers similar territory with the group's many BBC appearances. Though fair-weather Erasure fans may be content with simply owning POP!, TOTAL POP! is for the truly devoted Bell/Clarke aficionado.
Blender (Magazine) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "This box, featuring all 39 of their singles, thrives on slutty electrobeats, smeared-lipstick soul and a DVD of eye-popping TV performances."
After founding seminal synth-pop outfits Depeche Mode and Yaz, Vince Clarke joined forces with singer Andy Bell in the mid-1980s to form Erasure, combining Clarke's melodic electro-pop pedigree with a more danceable approach. The duo scored numerous hits throughout the second half of the '80s. Though their chart presence diminished somewhat in the '90s, the pair continued tenaciously into the 21st century. Latter-day releases found Erasure saluting their influences, with an EP of Abba tunes in '92 and a covers album, OTHER PEOPLE'S SONGS, in 2003.
