Artist: MFSB; Whitney Houston Distributor: Phantom Import Distributi Notes: Personnel: Teddy Pendergrass, Whitney Houston (vocals); MFSB. Producers include: Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff, Linda Creed, Luther Vandross, Vincent Calloway. Compilation producer: Barry Benson. Recorded between 1978 & 1993. Includes liner notes by Tracy H. New. This is part of Rhino Records "Bedroom Classics" series. Few singers could have kicked off Rhino's Bedroom Classics series as fittingly as Teddy Pendergrass, but this is the umpteenth time he has been anthologized; it's not as if the planet has been starving for a strong summation of his baby-making material. That said, a good deal of care was used in putting this particular compilation together. While not as thorough as 2003's Anthology (The Right Stuff), it's a fine introduction -- despite the fact that it's built around a theme. (After all, the bedroom was Pendergrass' theme.) Plenty of enduring songs are here, including "Close the Door," "Joy," "It Should've Been You," "Hold Me," and "This Is My Last Time." ~ Andy Kellman
Teddy Pendergrass's rough, sensual croon was first introduced to the listening public during his tenure as a singer for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. After leaving the group in 1976, Pendergrass recorded several albums for Gamble & Huff's famed Philadelphia International label, and became one of the definitive purveyors of the slow jam. Pendergrass was left permanently paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair following a car accident in 1983. Despite his disability, Pendergrass continued to record and has remained one of R&B's most popular artists.
