No Depression (p.91) - "THE GLEAM is ultimately just a short stopgap on the Avett Brothers' greater journey, but it's a worthwhile and beautiful little detour."
The Concord, North Carolina, siblings Seth and Scott Avett formed the Avett Brothers, which released its debut album in 2002, after a series of informal jam sessions with friends. The band blends its DIY bluegrass sound with an unaffected adherence to indie rock values, and the result, which sounds a lot like late-1950s Greenwich Village folk filtered through 21st-century post-rock sensibilities, has since gained it countrywide recognition. Subsequent years have seen the band making appearances on national television and receiving awards from the Americana Music Association.
