Audio Remasterer: Sangwook "Sunny" Nam. Along with Dave Koz and Gerald Albright, Boney James has carved out a nice niche for himself as one of the most popular smooth jazz saxophonists ever. Now, Mr. James has gone and done a concept album, with the (eternal) concept being Valentine's Day love. His melodious, suave sax playing brings out the amorous best in choice selections by Barry White, Stevie Wonder, and James Taylor, whose "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" features singer R&B singer Quinn, something of a Boney James discovery.
JazzTimes (p.87) - "[I]nstant classics. 'Hold on Tight' is a slow-burning ballad with strings, while 'City of Lights' is a melancholy piece that pays homage to the subject of the title, the romantic city of Paris."
Saxophonist Boney James spent the requisite decade or so touring with jazz fusion and R&B acts as a side player, but stepped into the spotlight in 1992 with a debut album that showcased his supple skills on tenor, alto, and soprano sax, on both melodic originals and imaginative covers. His trademark blend of sexy R&B and heady jazz appealed to a wide range of listeners, and he has since released albums on a regular schedule, scoring hits on the jazz, R&B, and dance charts.
