A decade after the department store quit selling a full array of electronics products, it is at it again - teaming up with J&R Music and Computer World. A new, 3,300-square-foot store located in the cellar of Macy's Herald Square will feature the consumer electronics retailer's hottest selling items. They include MP3 players, digital cameras, computers, CDs, DVDs and cell phones. The shop, dubbed "J&R Express," opened to the public Aug. 7 and will have its grand opening tomorrow at noon. "This was a terrific opportunity, being in an icon store," said Rachelle Friedman, J&R co-CEO. With its first satellite store, J&R is hoping to tap into the midtown as well as uptown crowds that find it inconvenient to travel to its Park Row flagship, as well as the flood of tourists who visit the Herald Square area, Friedman said. "I think it will raise our profile," she said. J&R, which has until now operated only out of its downtown location and its Web site, will see how the Herald Square store fares before it decides to open more, Friedman said. Former Yankees player Graig Nettles and comedian Steve Harvey will be attending the store's grand opening at noon tomorrow. Also, WOR Radio host Joan Hamburg will be broadcasting her show live from the new shop, Friedman said. Return to news index page: click here!
